What Is a Sweet Peach?
Sweet peaches are a peach variety with natural sweetness and low acidity levels that highlight its characteristic flavor. Georgia-grown peaches are sweet, thanks to the region's red clay soil and climate conditions — hot, humid days and warm, mild nights mean sugar development doesn't slow down.
What Are the Most Common Uses for Sweet Peaches?
This type of peach is juicy and aromatic, making it perfect for a wide variety of uses and recipes, including:
- Jams: They are sweet, juicy, and soft and are ideal for creating smooth and spreadable jams.
- Salads: Try adding sweet peaches for a fun and tasty accent to your salads. You can dice or slice them to create a red, white, and blue summer salad.
- Salsas: Adding sweet peaches to salsa offers the perfect sweet touch to balance out the other spices.
- Desserts: They are ideal for a flavorful dessert. You can grill them for a warm and crunchy bite or serve them with cream for a fast and easy treat.
- Canned: Finely cut peach slices and can them to enjoy their juicy and sweet taste year-round.
- Iced treats: They make the perfect summer treat when combined with ice and milk to make frozen smoothies and ice pops, and they are the best match for ice cream.
- Baked goods: Peaches are one of the favorite ingredients for creating baked goods, from coffee cakes and muffins to fruit cobblers and pies.
- Drinks and cocktails: Nothing says summer like a glass of peach iced tea, a sangria, or a peach margarita.
When Do the Sweetest Peaches Grow?
The peach season starts in early May, with the clingstone peach harvest and ends in early September with the later varieties of Freestone peaches. However, the taste profiles of peaches are different depending on variety type, harvest time, and ripeness. The best time frame to get sweeter peaches is at the peak of the season during summertime, from late May to mid-August.
What Are the Varieties of Sweet Peaches?
Clingstone peaches are the first variety to ripen in harvest season. They are smaller in size compared to other varieties. They also have a red blush on their skin, a softer flesh, and a sweeter taste. The clingstone peaches are known for their extra sweet taste and flesh that “clings” to the pit of the peach and are mostly available at farmers markets from the second week of May to mid-June.
Freestone peaches are the most popular variety of the season for their juiciness and sweet flavor. They are larger, and their key characteristic is their juicy and firm flesh, which falls off the pit. They are harvested later in the season but have the longest run, ranging from early June to late August.
