While it may seem a simple topic, there's much debate on the best way to store strawberries. This guide cuts through the noise to make it easy for you to store your strawberries and keep them fresh for longer.

How to Prepare Strawberries for Storage

Before you prepare your strawberries for storage, pick out any that are already going bad. Look for signs of mold and remove any that look wilted or soggy.

Next, remove the stems and cut the tops off, as this will keep strawberries fresh for longer.

How to Wash Strawberries

Before you store your strawberries, you should wash them, as this can prevent mold and harmful bacteria from growing on them as you store them.

The best way to wash strawberries is in 125ºF (51ºC) water for 30 seconds. Then, dry your strawberries in a salad spinner. Alternatively, you can pat them dry with a towel or simply leave them to dry in an open container for two hours.

Many people suggest adding one part vinegar to 10 parts water when washing strawberries with this method. Results using vinegar can vary, which is why we suggest sticking to hot water alone.

How to Store Strawberries in the Fridge

Once you've washed and dried your strawberries, place them in a clean and sealable container. Use a container that is big enough to have some room left over once you've placed your strawberries inside it.

Some people like to line their containers with paper towels to absorb any moisture. However, as long as you've dried your strawberries well before storing them, you shouldn't need to use paper towels.

How to Store Cut Strawberries

Cut strawberries can also be stored in an airtight container in the fridge. However, cut strawberries don't tend to stay fresh as long without the protective layer of the skin.

The best way to store cut strawberries is in the freezer. While this may not always be convenient, it's perfect for when you want to use your strawberries in a recipe
